People relate to the PSAT as a practice test for the SAT. While, yes, it can prepare you and help you know what to expect, it can be so much more. You can receive the National Merit Scholarship if your score is high enough. Some people take the test merely to score what they need to get into the college they are wanting to attend. So, taking the preliminary SAT will help you to be knowledgeable of how the test works and what to expect. Others take it, in hopes of getting the National Merit Scholarship. When Do You Take The PSAT?The PSAT is always given in October. So you have the summer leading up to school and a couple months of the school year to prepare. The summer is a great time to get yourself ready for the test because you have a lot less distractions going on then. The only bad thing is that it does take a little while to get your scores back. It is about mid December before you will know your score on the PSAT. Depending on your school that you attend, the PSAT test is $17, but your school may cover some of the cost if not all. How Do You Study For The PSAT?There are so many resources available to study and prepare for the PSAT. You can choose from online options, in person tutoring, or even buying books at a local bookstore. All of these places will have options you can pick from that will best suit you and the ways you like to study. The test can be a stressful time for many people who get nervous taking the test. Taking the time to prepare and calm your nerves by knowing what to expect is great. It will help you on test day to feel more comfortable. What is a Good PSAT Score?The scoring of the PSAT ranges from 320-1520 and changes by 10 point increments. The highest score you can get on the PSAT is a 1520, that is a perfect score. The test is graded in two equal parts, being Math and then Language, Reading, and Writing. The two sections will be scored between 160-760 and then added together at the end for your overall score. You can also view how they broke down each section and how many questions you got right out of each section of the test. That still equals out to the same overall score. The last thing you will be put into is a percentile list. This will show you in percentages how you did on the test compared to all the other testers. What All You Will See On Your Score ReportYou will see a variety of numbers and percentages all though the score sheet. This is a breakdown of the two sections, and then a breakdown of each individual section. The section math will be broken down into each individual area and scored. What Is An Overall Good Score For A Junior?The real answer to what is a good score, depends on what your personal goals are. It overall depends on the college you want to attend and what score they are looking for. But, when you are booking at your scores and percentile that you are given, a good score is one that is in the 75% or higher. Being in the 75% means that you scored between a 1150-1160 on your PSAT. Knowing your scores and where you need to improve, if anywhere, is very important for preparing for the SAT. You will be able to see if one area is causing you more problems then the other. What PSAT Score is National Merit in 2020?Depending on where you live will depend on the target score for receiving the National Merit Scholarship. If you are taking the PSAT in hopes to receive the scholarship you should make sure you are doing the right thing. You will need to score in the top 3-4% to be a commended student and the top 1% to be a semifinalist for the scholarship. Making sure that you are full time enrolled in high school and taking the courses geared toward college. You also have to be a United States citizen, or applied to be one. The PSAT should be taken no later then your junior year of high school. When you know the score that you need for your state, you should aim for a couple points higher. How to Calculate Your Score For The ScholarshipEvery state has its own score requirements for the PSAT NAtional Merit SCholarship qualifications. The average number that is needed is 218. There are 3 states that have the highest score needed of 223, they are District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Here is a list of some of the states and their scores required:
In order to find out your National Merit score you will need to take the individual scores of your reading, writing, and math scores and add them together. You would then multiply that number by 2 to get your score. You would then refer back to your state and their requirements for the score needed to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.
